The Great

Hulu’s alt-history comedy ended its third season with Elle Fanning’s Catherine dancing triumphantly to AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” after mourning the death of her husband Peter. But that wasn’t intended to be the show’s final image, series creator Tony McNamara told EW.com: “For me, it’s not an ending. It’s a rebirth in a way for her as a character. She hasn’t ruled by herself yet… Even the grief of him colored everything she did. So I guess for me, it’s like now she’s free of him, and she’s deeply damaged… What happens now? She’s kind of cut loose in the way that [the real] Catherine the Great was once she was free of all that — she ruled in a quite crazy way. So I’m interested in that version of Catherine that we haven’t seen.”

He added that Catherine “doesn’t know Georgina is betraying her left, right, and center. Amongst the ensemble, there’s a lot of intrigue to be played out, I suppose.”
