With Dave and Alex finally getting the closure they needed, Dave was opening up to a new possibility… with another member of the gang, perhaps? “Would Penny have been part of that? Maybe. We would have needed to regroup because Penny and Alex are so close,” series creator David Caspe told TVLine. Other possible storylines: Alex hitting the dating scene, and Brad and Jane talking about starting a family or getting new jobs. “To see Elisha Cuthbert, who is so funny and was sort of undiscovered to us before as a really talented comedienne, [play Alex] dating really for the first time with someone other than Dave would have been a lot of fun. I’m bummed about not getting to tell those stories,” said EP Jonathan Groff.
The “lost” Season 4 premiere, titled “Happy to Be Here,” was performed by the cast in October 2016 at Entertainment Weekly‘s EW PopFest, revealing that everyone in the group had since gone their separate ways. Shenanigans bring everyone back together, but the episode ends with Dave waking up on the night before his and Alex’s wedding, suggesting that the entire series was a dream.
The cast reunited over Zoom in July 2020 to read another new episode, titled “And the Pandemmy Goes To…”, during which — among other developments — Brad lies to Jane about where he was quarantining, Dave officiates Penny and Max’s wedding, and Alex apparently has a baby with… Derrick?! Drama!!!
