I just rewatched Blade 2: Bloodhunt. A lot of people that I know don't like the movie or even the idea of a Wesley Snipes vampire action movie. However I say the same thing to them that I said when the first Blade movie came out: at least it's true to its roots. I know it's not much of a compliment but I think that it is quite a feat. I can only imagine how the pitch meeting for this movie went, they asked Hollywood executives to put up some serious cash so that they could make an R-rated comic book adaptation. Comic books are often seen as a children's market, so the thought of making an R-rated movie based on one must seem (to a movie executive) like shooting yourself in the foot. They very well could have made the movie an "edgy PG-13" as they are sometimes called and tried to maintain the teen fan base. Instead they went all out, pushed the film a little and ended up with a much better film.
Now, I like horror films and horror comics. I don't know what it is about vampires and other monsters that intrigues me so but they do. Now, if you don't like vampire movies then don't go see Blade 2, if you do then this movie might be right up your proverbial alley. The characters, other than a select few can be a little weak but the visuals are damn fine. That and the film feels more like a horror flick, much more so than the first one did.
I think the true beauty of Blade 2 is that it shows that not all comic fans are the same. Some like melodrama, some like superheroes in tights, some like fantasy and some like horror. Blade 2 is a representation of the diversity of the comic medium and I applaud it for that. Hopefully someone out there will see Blade 2 and wander into comic stores to pick up Marvel's new Blade series. Perhaps we'll end up adding some fresh blood to our ranks.
